Davey Dunmow A "Watcher" guardian of FairyWorld

Davey Dunmow is a woodman living and working in FreeWood. He lives in an old converted guards van used on the now disused railway track that runs through part of the wood.

Davey is often thought of as weird or mad by others who have seen him, but Tim is drawn to his solitary lifestyle and envys his luck to be living in the place he loves so much.

Everything is not as it seems and there is more to Davey than meets the eye. He is sometimes seen in more than one place or can seemingly get from here to there much faster than most. He can never be seen after dark and he's never been seen to eat or drink.

He always wears a large brown trenchcoat with large pockets and lapels. He always carries a long stick and is followeded by a shaggy black dog.

He is known as the guardian or caretaker of the woods, but nobody knows who he works for. Largely because of these things he remains mysterious and is likened to "Jack 'o' the Green" or "Willo the Wisp" with all the hearsay and folkfore that follows when something or someone is little understood.

There are some tales told about the will-o'-the-wisp being guardians of treasure, much like the Irish leprechaun leading those brave enough to follow them to sure riches. Other stories tell of travellers getting lost in the woodland and coming upon a will-o'-the-wisp, and depending on how they treated him, the spirit would either get them lost further in the woods or guide them out.

Superficially Jack o the Green or the Green Man would appear to be pagan, perhaps a fertility figure or a nature spirit, similar to the woodwose (the wild man of the woods), and yet he frequently appears, carved in wood or stone, in churches, chapels, abbeys and cathedrals, where examples can be found dating from the 11th century through to the 20th century.
